Intersection of Change has been working since 1996 to serve and revitalize our community. Key highlights include:

1996

Intersection of Change established

Elder C. W. Harris, a life-long community resident and founding pastor of Newborn Community of Faith Church, establishes Intersection of Change (originally named Newborn Holistic Ministries) to address poverty related challenges in the community. Together with co-founders Amelia Harris and Todd Marcus, the three work to develop programming to address unmet community needs.

2000

1928 Pennsylvania Avenue renovated

After years of renovations, fundraising, and help from volunteers, 1928 Pennsylvania Avenue is fully renovated to serve as the home of Martha's Place.

Martha's Place opened

Intersection of Change opens Martha's Place as its first program to offer residential recovery for women overcoming substance abuse and homelessness. The program provides housing with support services to help women achieve sobriety while maintaining a job and housing.

Martha's Garden created

Six vacant lots next to Martha's Place are acquired and converted into an outdoor meditative garden for residents of the program.

2005

Long-term Phase added to Martha's Place

592, 590, 588, & 586 Presstman Street are renovated from vacant buildings to offer long-term housing for women in Martha's Place and increase the capacity of the program.

2007

Choose Life Memorial Garden created

The Choose Life Memorial Garden is created as an outdoor memorial space and mural in memory of lives lost to drugs in the community.

Jubilee Arts introduced as new program

Intersection of Change opens Jubilee Arts as its second community program which offers classes in dance, visual arts, ceramics, and youth business along with public art projects to revive the historic arts legacy of Pennsylvania Avenue.

2009

1947 Pennsylvania Avenue reclaimed

1947 Pennsylvania Avenue is revonated from a vacant building and named the Harris-Marcus Center. It serves as home for Jubilee Arts plus offices for Intersection of Change and Martha's Place.

2016

Strength to Love II added as new program

Intersection of Change adds a third program, Strength to Love II, which uses an urban farm to offer employment to returning citizens, workforce development for youth, and help address food apartheid.
